Russell Peters left Delhi in splits. For the uninitiated, Russell Dominic Peters is a Canadian stand-up comic of Indian descent, from Brampton.

An appearance at Sri Sathya Sai International Centre in Delhi, sponsored by Black Dog, sold out in no time; when his first shows in Sydney and Melbourne were announced in May 2006, 10,000 tickets were gone with no advertising! A comedian must have a TV sitcom, movie or comedy album to succeed, but Russell built a following by word of mouth. His agents, Creative Artists Agency, call this phenomenon, 'The Legend of Russell Peters'.

Coming back to his performance in Delhi, there were no classic 'Tapmybong' or 'Who's gonna get hurt', but the material was amazing all the same. The opening was by Rusty Dooley, a U.S. comedian. ''And I brought him to India,'' says Russell, with a glint in his eye. ''I told him Europe was just like India, a white India,'' and he had the audience in the palm of his hand.

There have been accusations of racism against him, and one cannot deny that he mimics the typical Indian behavior we now associate our parent's generation with and perhaps with those that are hopelessly reminiscent of Indians overseas. The cheapness of Indians, perhaps to do with our inherent love of a good bargain, was the butt of his jokes. The fact that we Indians invented the zero was according to him, the pinnacle of our cheapness. His imitation of an Indian crying at the sight of the zero, saying 'that's beautiful', was indescribable!

But the best part about his comedy is his chat sessions with people in the audience. To create comedy with such spontaneity, and with unrehearsed material, is something that not many comedians can do. But he's a natural, and of course, his quips about Punjabis and Gujaratis, are hilarious! He also had fashion advice for the men, which was to shave their chest hair! And if you are a Peter Russell fan, you would know I'm skipping most of the er … unprintable stuff; I came out of the auditorium having laughed for one and a half straight hours, hoping he'll come back to Delhi soon.

As the season throttles into full gear, StyleKandy take a look at the polo lifestyle. It's 10-30 A.M. on a Sunday. A few players are sitting on a hay bale, sipping tea. Behind them, the horses are standing in their stalls. They look oddly naked with their manes shaved into stubbly Mohawks to keep the hair from getting tangled in the player's reins. One of the players walks from one stall to the next checking on his ponies, who are recuperating from a body-slamming game the day before. He walks in close, puts his nose up against hers, and exhales raucously. "This is what they do to each other," he says with a sheepish grin, "so I always do that to them." It is a scene that's replayed every morning he's in the Jaipur Polo Grounds this season and then replayed in every city he finds himself in.

Derby weekend always brings out the celebrities and the McDowell Indian Derby Weekend is no exception. Over the years, a stream of celebrities from film, music, sports, politics and wealth have been drawn to the derby. Even though I got only three hours of sleep last night, I cannot wait to enter the celeb-infested race course. I'm on the list, but Mahalaxmi is full to capacity. Luckily, I pull some strings and slide past hundreds of people trying to schmooze their way in.

The Mumbai Marathon 2008 brought together stars and commoners on the streets of the country's commercial and entertainment capital. It was a picturesque backdrop for 33,000 people, who put on their jogging shoes for the fifth Standard Charted Mumbai Marathon, reputedly Asia's largest race with prize money of $1 million.

Sanjay Leela Bansali's 'Black' had a powerhouse performance by Amitabh Bachchan as the cantankerous old teacher who takes on the seemingly impossible task of teaching the hearing-impaired, mute-and-blind Rani Mukherjee to become a person in her own right. She's extremely good too, and so is the girl who plays the young Rani. The audiences were mesmerized and came out of the theatre saying the film had given the opportunity to experience a whole new world of people they did not know existed. But no one did anything for them … until now. Shyamlee Kalra is producing a show titled 'BLACK-60 minutes beyond color' … an event for the privileged who see and live the color black. The four-city mega-event is a charity fundraiser, and encompasses a designer showing against a backdrop of classic photography, contemporary dance performances, and live music by Anoushka Shankar and Talvin Singh. The photographs on exhibit would later be converted into a coffee table book that would be retailed and the proceeds would go to a charity for the visually impaired.
